TRAUMA, BURN and
CRITICAL CARE SURGERY

DIVISION OVERVIEW

The Trauma, Burn and Critical Care Division is based at Harborview Medical Center. The only Level 1 (regional) Trauma Center serving Washington, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho, this clinical arm of Harborview - known as the Northwest Regional Trauma Center - cares for emergency surgical and trauma patients, and is closely linked to the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center. Working closely with Plastic Surgery division, Trauma, Burn and Critical Care provides highly skilled, emergency and rehabilitative burn care for victims in the four-state region. By cooperative agreement with Children's Hospital, Harborview is also the region's only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center.

Pathophysiology of Post-Injury Infection and Organ Failure

Severe traumatic injury results in biochemical and physiological changes that can lead to nosocomial infection (pneumonia, wound infections, etc.) and remote organ (lung, kidney, liver) failure.
