Edgar Figueredo, MD, FACS, is a double board-certified surgeon, an Associate Professor of Surgery, and leader of Simulation in Health Care at the VA Hospital.
Dr. Figueredo’s clinical focus is in surgical management of conditions of the esophagus, colon, and adrenals, as well as hernia repairs, trauma and surgical critical care. Dr. Figueredo specializes in minimally invasive surgical techniques including laparoscopic and robotic surgery. Dr. Figueredo hopes to help veterans with the latest minimally invasive surgery procedures, knowing the faster recovery will be a true advantage for them.
Dr. Figuerdo has a profound interest in simulation in health care. He finds helping with the formation of medical students, residents and fellows very rewarding. He helps his residents practice simulation in laparoscopic and robotic surgery at the hospital, following Dr. J.I. Curry's modification of Halsted's motto, "See one, practice on a simulator (with feedback), do one." Dr. Figuerdo is a member of several surgery associations and is frequently invited to conferences worldwide, due not only to his expertise, but because of his knowledge of many languages.
Dr. Figueredo enjoys traveling with his family, especially to historic places or where scuba diving opportunities are present. He really enjoys practicing sports, mainly triathlon, soccer, basketball, golf, tennis and squash. He likes music, from opera to rock and salsa, and loves playing the guitar with his children. He is an avid reader of classic literature and enjoys police novels and TV shows. He speaks English, Italian, Portuguese, French and Spanish, and is learning German, Japanese and Chinese.
