About James D. Perkins
James D. Perkins, MD, is a board-certified surgeon, Vice Chair of Surgery, and a UW Professor of Transplant and Surgery. He is the Director of the highly published research laboratory, Clinical and Bio-Analytics Transplant< Laboratory (CBATL).
Dr. Perkins believes in helping patients to be well-informed so they and their family, along with their care providers, form one team to obtain the best clinical result possible. He also believes care teams that follow their quality measures closely have superior clinical results.
As Chief of the UW Medicine Division of Transplantation from 1989 – 2004, he pioneered several procedures, including early split-liver transplants. His research interests include improving surgical care through evidence-based clinical guidelines and continuous performance measures, outcomes research, machine learning to build predictive models that improve patients’ care, and process improvement in clinical care.
Personal Interests
In his free time Dr. Perkins enjoys traveling with family, reading, competing in analytical competitions with a team of friends, helping his wife raise her horses, and keeping up with their dog, Lady.
