Dr. Venu Pillarisetty and the UW Tumor Immune Microenvironment (TIME) Lab published in Gut
Dr. Venu Pillarisetty, Professor, HPB Surgical Oncology, and his research team in the UW Tumor Immune Microenvironment (TIME) Lab published “Blockade of interleukin 10 potentiates antitumor immune function in human colorectal cancer liver metastases” in Gut. Co-first authors Drs. Kevin Sullivan and Xiuyun Jiang tested the therapeutic effect of blocking the immunosuppressive cytokine interleukin-10 (IL-10) in metastatic microsatellite stable colorectal cancer – the most common form of the disease – using a human tumor slice culture model. They found that IL-10 blockade activated antitumor immunity, which resulted in almost two-fold greater cancer cell death. This finding has exciting potential for future systemic therapies for patients with microsatellite stable colorectal cancer liver metastases, which have thus far not responded to immunotherapy.
