The Division of CT surgery offers many opportunities for medical students and pre-med students to gain valuable experience in the field of CT surgery.
Medical Student Sub-Internship
UWSOM Surg 685 CT Surgery Clerkship (4 weeks)
Serve as a sub-intern on the Cardiothoracic surgery service at the UWMC. Opportunity to participate in the full spectrum of perioperative care for both cardiac and thoracic surgery patients including end stage lung disease, heart failure and transplantation patients, with an emphasis on cardiopulmonary physiology and perioperative management.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
- Further develop knowledge of cardiothoracic disease and enhance the ability to manage comprehensively manage the problems encountered in cardiac and thoracic surgery patients.
- Participate in patient care (including diagnosis, preoperative and postoperative care) and learn about the cardiopulmonary hemodynamics.
- Gain exposure to a wide variety of both cardiac and thoracic disease entities and participate in both open heart and thoracic procedures in the operating room.
- Develop polished skills in the clinical assessment of vascular heart disease and the EKG diagnosis of arrhythmias
Medical students interested in applying for an away rotation must submit their application through VSAS and the UW School of Medicine. Scheduling is done by the departments and begins in May after UW student scheduling is finished. Clerkship offers will be sent to students with complete and eligible applications after May 1st.

Clinical “shadowing” within the Division of CT Surgery is available throughout the year on a case-by-case basis. During these clinical observerships you will have the opportunity to shadow our surgeons in the OR as well as the clinical setting.
