Dominique DeGraaff, MD

Medical School:

Bio:

I was born outside of Portland, Oregon. I am a first generation Mexican American and daughter of an undocumented immigrant from Mexico. My father came to this country to give me a better future and he did just that! I attended Whitworth University on a full ride as a Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium Scholar, received my B.S in biology and met my husband, Bret. My husband and I then attended the University of Washington School of Medicine where I fell in love with cardiothoracic surgery as a first-year medical student.

Personal Interests:

I love all things outdoors: snow shoeing, paddle boarding, back country backpacking, and running. In addition, I have trained house cats who are paid models and have two dogs that join my husband and I on all our outdoor adventures.

Clinical Interests:

Lung transplant, surgical education, and global health.

Why UW?

I believe in the people UW has trained and believe in those UW is training. UW is my village, and they have been all along. The UW CT surgery department is a family and that is what makes it so special.

What advice do you have for incoming interns?

Take every opportunity to scrub every case, assist with every procedure on the floor no matter how small, and ask questions. At the beginning, you don’t know what you don’t know so ask questions to find out.

What do you like best about living in Seattle?

Access to endless outdoor activities and the bakeries.
