Sara Javid, MD
Professor, Section Chief, Breast Surgery, Division of General Surgery
I am passionate about individualizing patient care and researching ways to tailor treatment to a patient and their disease subtype. I currently conduct research on the use of advanced imaging techniques, such as breast MRI, to help distinguish which cases of DCIS, or non-invasive breast cancer, are lower risk for progression to invasive cancer in order to de-escalate therapy for patients with this diagnosis. I am also a co-investigator on the DUET study, a study examining whether circulating breast tumor cells in a patient's bone marrow at time of early-stage breast cancer diagnosis predicts metastatic breast cancer years later. I am also actively researching ways to automatically translate patients' breast pathology reports into more layman-friendly terms so as to empower patients with knowledge about their diagnosis and surgical results as well as to improve their confidence in communication with their surgeon.
